Technology Advancements

Gordon Moore was the creator of Moore’s law theory in 1965, which is very interesting to me because he thought that integrated circuits would change the game on how we see the pricing on electronics. Meaning that with each year or two we will see that the technology we have will become faster and better, while also decreasing the price of the devices.

Buckminster Fuller was a brilliant mind who created many things to help revolutionized the world since the 1960’s, one of his most brilliant works was the Geodesic Dome. Fuller created this structure because he has always believed that we can create things to do more with less, this structure is seen everywhere from kids’ playgrounds and then huge building in California and in Africa too.

Ray Kurzweil has the same kind of idea that Moore’s does but what Ray see’s that everything is gradually going to get better over time because we are growing as a population and getting smarter every generation almost like evolution. Ray says that with every generation is left with the past generations best ideas to work with almost as steppingstones to work and make their ideas even better and then pass it to the generation after that and so on.

Peter Thiel is the co-creator of the online banking service called PayPal and is the creator of Thiel’s Theory. Thiel has the idea that the new generation that we are in right now does not have the minds for innovation like we did in the past, which this is why we haven’t made any new things like flying cars, underwater cities, and the cure to all the different types of diseases and cancers. He also mentions that he thinks this is because of the fact that we are getting comfortable of where we are and that the children do want to be good in school but they only want to be better than their surrounding classmates rather than to try and learn everything there is to learn.

There are a few similarities and a few differences between all four of these theories that make each one unique. Some similarities between the first three theories is that our technology is only going to rise with each generation of life we have like a steppingstone for the generations to come, but while we grow our technology the price for this technology will decrease making everything less expensive. But there is also a big difference of one from all the rest which is from Peter Thiel that contradicts everything that the others are saying because he thinks that we are running out of brilliant minds and innovators because we are not challenging our children to be the best but to just be a little better than the people around them.

There are a few aspects from these four articles I looked at that really surprise me because I would have never thought of these things or looked at it in the perspective that they are. The biggest one that surprised me is Thiel when he mentions that we need to stop creating these little things and start reaching for more and exploring what we know and what we don’t know. This is true because there is so much on this Earth that we still do not know or understand, but it seems like we just have given up on exploring our boundaries because we are just comfortable where we are at as a civilization. One big this for me is that we have only discovered a very small percent of the ocean and the species in it, just imagine if we even just discover 20 percent more of that area of the world how much we would figure out about our planet.

Digital Storytelling Project

This assignment was our final project for this course, we had to create a video with a voiceover on it about technology in our career path. Mine is criminology and i chose the Shot Spotter, which tells the police exactly where a gun shot happened minutes after the gun was fired. I used Microsoft movie maker to create this assignment and the assignment overall was pretty fun and easy.

Animated Explainer Video

For this assignment we had to create a virtual whiteboard drawing using a whatever site we wanted. I used animaker to create mine because it seemed like the easiest way to go about finishing this assignment. In this assignment we had to talk either about Blockchain technology or Bitcoin. I chose to talk about bitcoin because I know a lot of people who use it and really like it, but personally i have never used it. This was a cool assignment because I really got to learn some good about bitcoin and maybe I can tell the people that use it a little bit of information that maybe they did not know about. Overall I think this assignment was really good and informational for me.

Group Project 2: VR and AR

The assignment we had to do this week was a group project, the group I was in had to talk about the pros and the cons about VR and AR usage in the work place. This assignment was actually pretty interesting because we got to see how companies used this equipment and if they thought it would help their employees. Overall I did not mind this project and the website we used was very easy to use, especially if you have to work in a group.

Storybook

Storybird would not allow me to get a link to send without buying a membership. Here is a downloadable version of my book.

This website was very hard to use personally, but I am sure for other people who are good with computers and websites like this one they will be fine. The book turned out pretty good and I am pretty pleased with it, the one big thing for me that I wish I could have been able to do is use my own pictures that I wanted to use not someone else’s pictures. Overall though I. would love it if we never again used this website because it had me going crazy trying to do this assignment and even trying to post it on my blog here too.

Thinglink: Inquiry Cycle

This assignment we did in class today has been very interesting to be completely honest. I have learned a lot about the Inquiry cycle over this past week, like how this is learning strategy is based on student learning things on their own and learning from their mistakes and also building on their finding to become better at everything they are learning. Rather than depending on their teacher having to teach them everything they need to know about the course or the material they need to know for labs, or tests.

Cybersecurity

For this assignment we had to create a Piktochart for cybersecurity, I chose the Importance of cybersecurity. This was a cool assignment for me because not only did I get to tell people about cybersecurity, but I also am going to use some of these tips for my own social media accounts. Overall I thought this was a great assignment because there are a lot of people out there who think they can not be touched or messed with but there is always someone in the world who can come in and mess with all of your social media accounts.

We did another assignment in class today, which we listened to a girl named Emily who told us a story about her being cat-fished by a girl that lived three houses down from her and how that effect not only her but her friends and her family too. These are the three questions we had to discuss today:

  1. What are your reactions to her story?

Emily’s story really makes me upset about the kind of people we have in this world and the different types of things they will do to get attention or to try and do to ruin another persons  life over social media.

2. What did you learn from her story?

From her story I have learned that no matter what we post on social media or we comment on someones picture or post, there will always be someone who is not going to agree with what we have to say. Individually I learned to not trust anyone with my social media accounts and my pictures because they can be hacked and made just as easily as we made our own accounts.

3. How might you use this story to inform your life or that of others?

I would inform others about this story by making sure they know about social media privacy and making sure they are putting things out online that they do not care that much about because if it is not secure that well then someone can easily take that information and make it there own and then make everyone think that they are you on social media.

Group Project- Trends in Technology

Today in this group project, I worked with Grace. We had the topic of Internet of Things and free learned that this basically means that anything that has an on and off switch that can be connected to another device is considered to be under this topic. This has been great for me to see how much technology has come along in these past couple years. Now we can connect our coffee makers and our lights to a timer to go off a certain time of the day every day of the week which to me is crazy!!!

Museum Kiosk Criminal Justice

1. What two suggestions from the readings about how to use PowerPoint effectively do you think are the most important to remember? Why?

–  The first thought that I think is important is “Rehearse your PowerPoint presentation and not just once. Don’t let PowerPoint get in the way of your oral presentation, and make sure you know how it works, what sequence the slides are in, how to get through it using someone else’s computer, etc. Make sure that you can deliver your presentation if PowerPoint is completely unavailable; in other words, make sure you can give your speech without your PowerPoint presentation”. The other thought that I think is important is, “learn how to give a good speech without PowerPoint. This takes practice, which means giving speeches without PowerPoint. Believe it or not, public speaking existed before PowerPoint, and many people remember it as being a lot better than it is now. A few people use presentation software in extremely effective ways—Steve Jobs and Stanford Law Professor Lawrence Lessig are two examples. Al Gore’s use of Keynote in the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” was a good model. But these three examples don’t look at all like the way most people use PowerPoint. Avoiding bad PowerPoint habits means, first and foremost, becoming a good public speaker”. Both these thoughts are important because when making a slide show you need to make sure that you know the information that you put down on the slideshow. Also another great thing to know and practice is rehearsing your presentation that way you are interacting with the audience rather than staring at the screen.

2. What is one thing you learned about PowerPoint that you didn’t previously know?

–  One thing that I learned from the readings is to put dark on light, and light on dark meaning if your background is dark keep the writing a light color and the same for the other way around.

3. Have you ever used PowerPoint to present and what was your experience like? Did you follow the rules to presenting with PowerPoint or not?

–  Yes I have used powerpoint before when I was in high school and I was not very good with the program, I remember when the assignment was graded there was a lot of things that I miss used. After the readings I think I can definitely make a proper powerpoint. I also was the person that read the powerpoint straight off the screen instead of knowing the text and engaging with the audience.

4. How was your experience creating your Museum Kiosk on Google Slides?

–  My experience using Google Slides has been pretty good because I am learning so many different things that I never knew before. This program has been very easy to use and navigate as well as creating the slides and making a proper format.

Screencast O Matic

This is an assignment for my Tech for Leading and Learning class EME2040 at the University of South Florida. Today I narrated a screen recording of someones e-portfolio who is in the Criminal Justice field because my major right now is criminology. This assignment has been pretty cool because I learned how to use a new system and I also got to look at a criminology e-portfolio.
